Interfaculty Institute of Genetics and Functional Genomics
In 2006, the agreement between the University of Greifswald and the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania committed the University to establish an Interfaculty Institute in which the teaching and research capacities in the field of genetics are gathered across all faculties. The"Interfaculty Institute for Genetics and Functional Genomics", created by the University Medicine Greifswald (UMG) and the Faculty of Mathematic s and Natural Sciences (MNF), aims to advance, through synergy, research performance and success in attracting third-party funding and to warrant teaching and supervision necessities of students of life sciences and medicine.
The Interfaculty Institute hosts two Departments. The Dept. of Molecular Genetic and Infection Biology belongs to the MNF, is headed by Prof. Sven Hammerschmidt and three research groups conduct their research within the Department (Hammerschmidt Group, Siemens Group and Schüller Group). The Dept. of Functional Genomics belongs to the University Medicine Greifswald and is headed Prof. Uwe Völker. Since December 2017, the Interfaculty Institute is located within the Center for Functional Genomics of Microbes (C_FunGene), a state-of-the-art research building at the natural science campus at Berthold-Beitz-Platz. Furthermore, the Center harbors Institutes of Microbiology (MNF), Mathematics and Computer Science (MNF), and Bioinformatics (UMG) as well as laboratories of the Institutes of Biochemistry (MNF) and Pharmacy (MNF).
